Laughing at my Nightmare

Apparel Design, Illustration.

Laughing at my Nightmare Inc. (LAMN) asked me to design the 2017 and 2018 commemorative T-Shirts for their annual "Walk, Run, and Roll" 5K races benefitting individuals with muscular dystrophy diseases by spreading positivity and providing quality-of-life improving equipment. Anyone who signed up for the “Walk, Run, and Roll” race was given the collectible T-Shirt to commemorate the event.

2018’s T-Shirt for Laughing at my Nightmare’s 6th Annual "Walk, Run, and Roll" 5K race’s design is loosely based off their mascot "Rebel Rex" crossing the finish line. See more about “Rebel Rex” below!

2017’s T-Shirt for Laughing at my Nightmare’s 5th Annual "Walk, Run, and Roll" 5K race’s design is inspired by the race’s location of SteelStacks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Rebel Rex?

“Rebel Rex” is the mascot for Laughing at my Nightmare Inc. (LAMN) that I created for AIGA Philadelphia’s Design For Good exhibition. The objective was to create a T-shirt to support and bring awareness to a local cause of our choosing.

LAMN’s founder Shane Burcaw’s mission to spread positivity, educate kids about adversity, and help individuals with Muscular Dystrophy diseases improve their quality of life inspired me to choose his cause.

Shane, a prolific blogger and author who regularly shares his life experiences with self-deprecating humor once described himself as looking like a T-Rex in a wheelchair due to his Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The image stuck with me, and I chose to illustrate it for my T-Shirt design as I knew it would definitely be an attention-grabbing image. For the exhibition, I created the image with paint pen directly on a white T-Shirt but quickly realized I could do something more with
the design.

After the exhibition, I realized I could contribute to the cause by creating the graphic in vector and donate it to Laughing at my Nightmare for use on T-Shirts and other merchandise. I created the design and got in touch with Shane
via Instagram.

Laughing at my Nightmare Inc. coined the name “Rebel Rex” and produced Stickers, Onesies, T-shirts, and various other merchandise for sale on their store to help raise money for their mission.

“Rebel Rex” also inspired their annual 5K Walk, Run, and Roll shirt for 2018 as a running T-Rex crossing the checkered finish line.
