2020 Social Awareness Illustrations

Self Initiated; Illustration, Social Media.

2020 has been a difficult time for most of us. The pandemic has been front-and-center (as it should be, seeing that it’s still occurring) but we also had several other major events that dramatically affected many.

I typically don’t provide much commentary on current events, but this year I was moved to address a few that hit close to heart for me. I responded to the events with illustrations and resources in hopes to generate awareness and raise funds.

  • Australian Bush Fires (June 2019-May 2020)

  • Coronavirus/COVID-19.

  • The 2020 Presidential Election. (November 2020)

Australian Bush Fires 2019-2020

Also known as “The Black Summer”, the 2019-2020 bushfire season in Australia was a period of unusually intense fires that burned a large portion of the continent. Sadly, many lives were lost, both human and animals alike. I wanted to bring awareness to fundraising efforts to aid the bushfire workers, people and affected wildlife so I created this image to draw attention and provided links where people could donate.

COVID-19
(Coronavirus)

At the beginning of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of the information being spread was being challenged with a large amount of poorly-sourced or completely falsified information. In an effort to help clarify, I created a series of informative illustrations coupled with up-to-date information in the captions with hopes that people could access the proper information more readily.

  • “Brighter Days Are On The Way” is a general morale booster and a beam of positivity to encourage those recently laid off, stuck-at-home, or feeling lonely that this too, shall pass.

  • “Flatten the Curve” is another encouraging message to continue to be steadfast and quarantine to help slow the spread.

  • “Snake Oil” is a precautionary post about the misinformation being spread and the explosion in “miracle-cures” and tonics that were popping up left-and-right by people trying to capitalize on the pandemic and fearful consumers.

  • “Wash Your Hands” encourages the first line of defense that the health experts constantly emphasized.

2020 Presidential Election

I created a series of three slides to be presented as a carousel post on Instagram with the intention of providing a last-minute push to get voters out to the polls on November 3rd. Slides two and three provided quick information regarding good practices and a kind reminder that when voting in person to still exercise social distancing and protection measures against Coronavirus/COVID-19.
